Garbally College 'Log On, Learners' Graduation
Tue, 09 Jun 2009 14:26:00 Z
Garbally College, (through Ms Jacinta Deady-Henry, TY Co-Ordinator) was one of the early adopters of the Log On, Learn initiative. The first session was so successful that the school decided to run a second! Rather than present the certificates of participation to everyone at the end of each course, Ms Henry invited the participants to take part in the school's annual TY end of year graduation ceremony. So, on the 19th May 2009 a very special evening took place in Ballinasloe, Co Galway. The TY students celebrated their graduation along with 15 'Log On, Learners'.
The evening was a wonderful account (with photos) of all the activities undertaken during the year - from work experience, food appreciation, school bank, ceile, Young Scientist, ECDL, fund raising, European tour, CPR, debating, public speaking etc, etc and Log On, Learn! The list was really impressive. Evelyn Pender, Intel Ireland was there to present the certificates of participation to the older learners and their student tutors for Log On, Learn.

YSI Show '09
Fri, 08 May 2009 13:59:33 Z

Log On, Learn was showcased at the annual Young Social Innovators' Show on 6th May 2009 in the RDS, Dublin. The day was a colourful (and very noisy) experience with over 5,000 people in attendance. There was a huge array of project exhibits (over 120), stands, poster projects (over 200), workshops and a terrific awards ceremony. The show highlighted the creativity, innovation and determination of young people when given an opportunity to address social issues. The Log On, Learn stand was located in the main exhibition area and there was plenty of action all day. Thanks to the young people and teachers who dropped by to say hello. Lots of folks said that they had already run the initiative in their schools. It was lovely to hear all the positive stories. Lots more people asked us for information about running the program in their schools and most are now looking at taking part from Sept 2009.

Featured on the Afternoon Show on RTE 1
Mon, 16 Feb 2009 14:26:23 Z
Log On, Learn was showcased on the Afternoon Show on RTE 1
Evelyn Pender, Community Solutions Manager at Intel Ireland and National Program Owner of Log On, Learn was invited to speak about the initiative on the Afternoon Show, RTE 1 (Ireland’s leading talk show) on Thurs 19th Feb '09. The Afternoon Show film crew recorded footage in Colaiste Chiaran, Leixlip during the previous week and four minutes of edited highlights were shown as part of the show. The footage from the school captured the 20 older participants and their tutors in action. The video included an interview with one 90-year old lady participating in the training, along with her teenage student tutor. It was obvious that the training was working well on the ground and that everyone was getting a lot out of taking part. Evelyn was interviewed by Trevor Keegan, one of the Afternoon Show’s regular co-presenters, and the interview was relaxed, chatty and informative. Overall the piece ran to ten minutes and provided great coverage of Log On, Learn.

Fantastic feedback from participants
Mon, 23 Mar 2009 15:15:03 Z
Some fantastic feedback received for TY LOL to date:
From TY Teachers:
"Just a note to let you know what a success the 'log-on learn' initiative is proving to be. We started it two weeks ago and to date it has taught us all something! One thing I can say for sure is that the result is more than the sum of its parts - there is a certain 'alchemy' happening that is very rewarding and enjoyable for all. The students here are very enthusiastic and the 'elders' seem equally so. As a teacher I am very interested in what our students learn by becoming the 'teacher'. I am hoping that the experience will give them a new perspective on their own learning and on the difficulties they themselves encounter in learning.”
“The students really took responsibility and showed themselves to be very capable tutors. They really appreciated the older people and their willingness to learn. The older people were well capable of taking on the new skills. They now have a much more positive image of teenagers. The tendency was to generalize and ‘knock’ teenagers i.e. bucket them all with the few trouble makers. But on this programme, they got very close and some seniors even brought presents for the students on the last week.”
“Just a note to say that we will finish our course next Thursday. We are having a graduation ceremony, tea, 'buns', music and Paddy O'Brien of over 60 shows fame will present the certs. It was one of the best things we've ever done in TY. We already have a waiting list for next year!”
“We started the course last week and it got off to a great start. Both students and tutors seemed to really enjoy it.”
“We have been absolutely inundated with request for places on Log On, Learn. Our Principal has confirmed that she will integrate this into our social and justice programme for September and we hope to run at least three courses during the next school year.”
“Due to the one-to-one nature of the modules, participants are more confident to ask questions, confirm what they know, and progress with confidence. They are moving faster than we anticipated, and furthermore, their friends are requesting a place in the upcoming course. The older people proved themselves fully capable of taking on the new skills. And they now have a much more positive image of teenagers. Some participants brought little presents for the students on the final week.”
“Just want to let you know our first session went very well. I even treated everyone to freshly baked scones!! Both adults and students really enjoyed to occasion.”
“We have just started the LOL programme in our school two weeks ago. I got the first 3 modules done with them. So far it is going well and all involved are really enjoying it.”
“We have had a successful beginning to our programme - the first group of older people has already been in to the school for their first session, which went very well - and are looking forward to the rest of their sessions. We then hope to start on a second group and have them finished before the end of the school year.”
“We're on the fourth lesson and it’s going great. The big 'students' and the TY students are really enjoying it.”
“Just want to let you know that we completed the last module today and all were thrilled with themselves. Didn't present the certificates of participation, instead I have invited them to the Transition Year Graduation in May. Thanks for sharing the inspiring idea and making a lot of people happy in their achievement.”
“We have 12 participants on the course here and 12 students in TY so it worked out really well. So far it’s going great - I don't know if that is due to the cup of tea or the class but either way they seem to be enjoying it.”
“Just to let you know that the Log on Learn module is going great. The students love it and are getting more and more enthusiastic every week. Their buddies love it too. Some have commented that it is the highlight of their week.”
“I just wanted to let you know that we completed week 3 of TY LOL and it's going great. Kids are doing a fantastic job and our trainees seem to be happy with progress. There's a great buzz in the room when the class is running! We'll definitely be doing it again next year (I already have a waiting list of subscribers).”
“We started our course last Thursday and had a wonderful afternoon. 11 of our TY students were available to teach the course. It went great. A few teachers remarked that when they walked past the computer room all you could see were the heads bent down together over the keyboards and a great buzz of conversation. Everyone really enjoyed the afternoon. Roll on next week.”
“The confidence that this programme has engendered in the students is remarkable. They are reliable, confident and well informed on the programme. Students have undertaken private study of the programme to ensure proficiency. Participants are progressing faster than they expected. Many of the participants would have attempted a computer course before but failed to complete more than two lessons”.
“This concept is ideal and for once the concept and the reality match expectations.”
From older participants:
“I liked the togetherness and people’s willingness to learn. There was one lady who was 89 years of age. She did really well and was an inspiration and encouragement for everyone else. It was really enjoyable. The students were very, very good. It was lovely to see the young and old integrating so well. We all got on and had great fun.”
“What a great bunch of lads we have teaching us. It’s great fun altogether. We’re learning loads and now I can use the mouse, email, the internet and even book flights.”
“Just an email to you to say thank you for making it possible to learn a new skill at my age (90 years). I enjoyed meeting the students at the college, especially my student tutor. She was very kind and patient.”
“I did a computer course before but it was too advanced for me, so now I’m learning the basics.”
“Every time I come to class I get more confident. I have a laptop at home which I’ve started trying things out on. Now I’m using e-mail, booking flights and surfing the net.”
From student tutors:
“It was a bit awkward the first day, but once I got to know my buddy, it was fine. She was terrible using the mouse at first, but got the hang of it after a while. Just a few weeks later and she’s flying – using Word and surfing the Internet!”
“When we started she didn’t even know how to turn a computer on. Now I have her doing e-mail, searching the Internet, going around Google Earth, shopping online and booking flights.”
“It’s really great. I find it relaxing ‘cos I don’t have to learn anything. I just show him. We chat a lot and have a great laugh. I have taught him how to use the internet, email and how to write a letter. He’s delighted that he can book a flight to London now. His son lives there.”
“It was really great. I just realised that they (the older people) are just like us. It was fun to be the teacher and feel in control for a change.”

Intel, Microsoft and An Post Join Forces to Promote "Log On, Learn"
Fri, 19 Dec 2008 17:26:19 Z
Dublin: October 1st 2008 - The launch of ‘Log On, Learn’ an initiative that provides computer training for older people, took place today at Castleknock Community College in Dublin. Minister Máire Hoctor, T.D. Minister for Older People, launched this initiative during Positive Ageing Week.
‘Log On, Learn’ is a simple and user-friendly method devised to engage our older population in computer training. The initiative is designed to ‘buddy up’ a participating transition year student tutor with an older person from their local community, so each shares their skills. The one-to-one aspect of this training will mean that the training is tailored to suit each older person’s needs. The training will take the older person’s initial skill level, learning pace, interests and hobbies into account. Anyone wishing to register their interest in ‘Log On, Learn’ should contact 01-214 7417.
Máire Hoctor, T.D. Minister for Older People at the launch of the initiative commented, “This is a wonderful initiative which will increase older peoples’ connectivity by giving them access to digital communication, while providing a unique opportunity for them to work with teenagers. I have no doubt this cross generational approach will be of mutual benefit. I congratulate teachers, transition year students, along with Intel, Microsoft and An Post for making this innovative approach, a reality.”
The programme is designed to run for 8 consecutive weeks during one, (or all three), school terms of transition year. This initiative allows young people to engage in a programme which has the power to change positively older people’s lives. Across almost 750 secondary schools nationally, this initiative has the potential to train over 30,000 older people, in computer skills, per annum.
In 8-weekly training sessions, (of between 1-2 hours each), which take place in the school’s computer lab/room, the student tutor shares:
- knowledge of how to use a PC and mouse - basic word-processing, eMail & internet
- confidence to overcome the ‘fear factor’ surrounding ‘new’ technologies
The older person shares:
- ability to relate and communicate
- memories of culture / rituals etc.
- life experience
‘Log On, Learn’ Log On, Learn is an Intel, Microsoft and An Post collaboration. It has been enthusiastically approved by Michael O’Leary, Transition Year National Co-ordinator.
“To survive and thrive in this growing knowledge-based economy, our older citizens must be equipped with 21st Century skills to stay in touch. Intel is committed to improving digital inclusion and education for all,” said John Davies, Intel General Manager, World Ahead Programme.
Dr. Kevin Marshall, Academic Programme Manager at Microsoft Ireland said, “We are constantly striving to identify ways in which technology can help everyone to realise their full potential, across all sectors of our society. The ‘Log On, Learn’ programme serves an incredibly useful purpose linking two sectors of society who derive valuable mutual benefits– older people who might not otherwise have access to technology and students who need to develop ICT skills to participate successfully in the 21st Century economy.”
Barney Whelan, An Post Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs said “We are directly in touch with millions of Irish people every working day, and we know the difference that this initiative will make to people, enabling them to fulfill their potential by using new communications tools to improve their own life, that of their peers and family, and the Irish economy and society in general”.
An Post has developed a national advertising campaign, including a 30-second TV ad, showcasing ‘Log On, Learn’ and encouraging older people and Transition Year students to become involved. This is the latest element of An Post’s successful national initiatives focusing on Literacy, and in particular, Technical Literacy.
